Interview success

After reading your resume, the employer may contact you and ask you to come into their workplace or office for an interview.

If you are given the opportunity to attend an interview, here are some helpful tips to make the experience less stressful:

  • dress smartly, be neat and clean and don't chew gum or smoke
  • turn off your mobile phone so you won't be distracted
  • be on time for the interview (allow a little extra time just in case)
  • be polite: smile, shake hands when you first meet the person who is going to interview you
  • use the proper names of the person you are speaking with (eg Mr Brown, Ms Black). Only use the person's first name if they have introduced themselves to you in that way and invited you to use their first name
  • make direct eye contact with the interviewer
  • try to be as relaxed as possible, speak clearly and positively
  • listen carefully and make sure you answer the questions asked – you can always ask them to repeat a question if you don't understand or lose your train of thought
  • show interest - ask questions about the job that you have prepared before going to the interview
  • have an extra copy of your resume handy at your interview, so that you can refer to it if you need to.
